How Long Do Hair Extensions Actually Last?

July 10, 2026

I get asked this constantly, usually by someone who's had a bad experience before extensions that looked great for two weeks and then turned into a tangled mess. So here's the honest version, not the version that sounds good in an ad.

The short answer

Most extensions need to be moved up every 6 to 8 weeks as your natural hair grows out from underneath them. With proper care, the hair itself can last several months across multiple move-ups, sometimes longer depending on the method and how well they're maintained.

What actually affects how long yours will last

How you sleep. Loose braiding at night matters more than people expect. Extensions that get slept on tangled tend to mat faster, not because of the hair quality, but because of friction.

What you wash with. Sulfate-heavy shampoos strip extensions (and your natural hair) faster than a gentler, sulfate-free option. This is one of the easiest fixes and one of the most overlooked.

How often you brush them. Not scrubbing your scalp with a brush, gently detangling from the ends up, daily. Skipping this is one of the fastest ways to shorten their lifespan.

The method itself. Tape-ins, beaded rows, and other methods all have slightly different timelines and maintenance needs. This is part of what we talk through at your consultation, since the "best" method really depends on your hair type and how active your lifestyle is.

What "natural looking" actually depends on

Extensions that look and move like your own hair come down to two things: the color match and the placement. I match to your actual hair color and texture, not just a swatch that's close enough, and I place them with your natural part and density in mind so there's no obvious line where your hair ends and the extensions begin.

If you've had extensions before that didn't blend well or didn't last, that's usually a placement or method issue, not a sign that extensions "just don't work" for your hair.

I'll walk you through everything you need to know, including the honest maintenance routine for your specific hair, at your appointment.
